50th anniversary events of the history

Being a Nurse. 50 Years Creating the Future is much more than a commemorative book; it is an invitation to reflect on what it means, today and over time, to be a nurse. The title encapsulates the thread that runs through all its pages: a profession built from diverse perspectives, shared experiences, and a deep vocation for caring.

The book connects past, present and future through the trajectory of the Hospital del Mar Nursing School and its link to the evolution of the nursing profession in Catalonia over the last 50 years. The five nursing conversations that structure it place dialogue at the centre and bring forward a plural, intergenerational perspective committed to the reality of the profession.

Reconstructing this history has not been easy. The 1981 gas explosion that destroyed the School's premises and the subsequent relocations led to the loss of much of the documentation that would have allowed a more precise reconstruction of the past. But this gap also highlights the power of memory and testimony from those who have been part of it and, above all, the resilience of an institution that, despite difficulties, has managed to persevere and reaffirm its purpose.

Drawing on the voices of 20 nurses-managers, clinicians, lecturers, researchers and former students-this book weaves a collective history that explains not only the path taken, but also the values that define the School; values that remain alive in the more than 5,000 professionals who have been trained there: committed nurses, with judgement and leadership capacity to transform our profession.

Integrated into the Mar ecosystem-with the Hospital, the University Campus and the Research Institute-the School continues to move forward. Because being a nurse is also this: choosing one's own path and continuously shaping the future of the profession.

The Hospital del Mar Nursing School is celebrating its 50th anniversary, reaching half a century of existence shaping the future of nursing. On 14 May, it celebrated this milestone with an emotional event held at the Sala Josep Marull, bringing together professionals, students, institutions and people connected to the School's history to celebrate fifty years of commitment to care and education.
